Description
Korean Pedestal DishThis high footed dish is a prototype of a Joseon dynasty ritual food vessel. Joseon white porcelains (baekja) are characterized by the beauty of modest forms, and minimal use of color, which conveyed the ideals of Korean Confucian state that was preeminent at the time. A particularly fine example.
I can’t say for certain if the lines on the face of the rock are naturally occurring or were manually worked
Once created
reflects the precision and artistry required to achieve repeating patterns across fabric
The vessel has been skillfully repaired at some point
dates to the mid-Edo period
The Buddha is shown seated cross-legged atop a lotus throne emerging from stylized waves and floral motifs
removable shrine to house sacred talismans in the form of paper amulets
They were stunning
and all the more admirable for it
shaped in the form of a spinning wish-granting pearl (hojin-no-tama)
A soft gray ash glaze covers the surface
A fine Shinto household shrine
